Spring break is over, and students only have a few more weeks left of school. Many are counting down the days until summer vacation. But it’s not time for students to mentally check out yet. In fact, now is the time when they need to keep pushing forward with final projects, end of grade exams, end of course exams, SATs, and other important dates coming up.
Take steps to help your child stay motivated to finish the end of the year strong before they begin their well-deserved summer break.
Stick to your routine. It can be tempting to start becoming laxer as the end of the school year draws near. But encourage your child to continue with their normal routine of working on homework, studying, taking breaks, and getting to bed at a decent time. If there are days where they have less work, getting it done sooner means more time to relax after, rather than procrastinating.
Create a visual calendar. Not only does this satisfy their need to count down to the last day of school, it provides reminders of what they need to complete and what they have to look forward to. Include deadlines for projects and dates for exams, but also add end of year celebrations. They know that once they finish that research project, next up is a school social or the last game of the season.
Break down tasks. Studying for AP tests, end of course exams, or the SATs or ACTs can seem overwhelming. That final project can seem like it has too many parts to finish. Help your child create a schedule that breaks down bigger tasks into smaller more manageable parts. For instance, they might focus on just one section of their review guide, one science formula, or one chunk of SAT terms each day until they’ve covered everything by the test date.
Review goals. Remind your child of how far they have come this year or this semester. Make them aware of all of the things they know and can do now that they couldn’t before. Revisit the goals they set for the end of the year and see how they’re progressing toward them. Make changes as necessary or set new goals they want to achieve over the next few weeks. They still have time to improve their grades and end on a high note.
Replenish supplies. Make sure that your child has fresh batteries in their calculator, enough notebook paper, and plenty of pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers, and other supplies to finish the year. The work they do in the final quarter or trimester still counts!
Boost their confidence. If your child is stressed out about the end of year, tutoring can help them finish strong. They can work on reinforcing key concepts and skills they’ll need to know for final exams, build more effective study and test prep strategies, and affirm that they really do know the material.
