Winter break is often a time for students to rest, recharge, and enjoy time with friends and family. Yet some students may find that they have assignments that are due when they return in January, or there are skills they want to keep sharp for when classes resume. Finals are coming up too. The holidays don’t have to be all work and no fun. It’s important for students to manage their responsibilities. Here are a few tips to get started.

  • Create a Schedule

Some students like to get everything done at once so they can relax the rest of the break. That’s fine if that’s what you prefer. Other students wait until the last minute and try to cram everything in, which isn’t recommended, as you probably won’t be showing your best work. Write down a list of any projects or assignments that must be completed over the break. Spread them out over several days so that you can alternate between doing schoolwork and having free time. Devote 30 minutes a day to studying and reviewing, then put everything away and do something else.

  • Make Time for Reading

Even if you don’t have any required reading assigned, it’s a good idea to stick with this habit anyway. Explore different authors or genres, or get started on a new series you’ve been wanting to read. Even if it doesn’t seem like you’re gaining anything from reading, you’re practicing comprehension and critical thinking, learning new vocabulary, and sharpening your mind.

  • Practice Key Skills Naturally

There are some skills you don’t have to plan for – they naturally fit into your routine. Cooking and baking are great ways to practice math and science. Writing out holiday cards or drafting an update about what each family member has been up to over the past year exercises your spelling, grammar, and writing mechanics. Playing games with your family is a valuable way to refine your problem solving, logic, and critical thinking skills.

  • Regroup for the New Year

Reorganize your study space so it’s fresh and inviting for when school returns. Restock all of your school supplies for home and in your backpack. Do a little bit each day until everything is cleaned up and arranged how you like it. Don’t forget to dump out your backpack, get rid of anything you don’t need, and file papers away where they belong.

  • Have Fun

Take time to do activities that you enjoy. You have been working hard all fall, and your mind needs time to rest and refocus. Do an art project or write a story just for fun. Learn a new hobby or pick up where you left off with something you used to do. Get outside, breathe in the fresh air, and soak up the sunshine, even if it’s a little chilly. Later you can curl up next to the fireplace to warm up, drink hot chocolate, and read a book, watch a movie, or play games with the family.
